Selous Game Reserve – Best Time to Visit

Selous Game Reserve – Best Time to Visit2018-07-19T03:49:09+00:00

Best time to visit: June to October

  • Rain is limited with plenty of sunny days and fewer mosquitoes;

  • Lower humidity and a cooler climate with daily average temperatures around 25°C (77°F);

  • However, this is the height of the tourist season so there are more visitors and vehicles in the reserve;

  • The area can be very dry and dusty.

Other good times to visit: January to March

  • The bush is lush, green and beautiful after the short rains;

  • Fewer tourists and accommodation may be more affordable;

  • Birdlife is abundant with many migratory birds in the reserve;

  • Wildlife may have babies and juveniles with them.

  • However, it is hot and humid with daily average temperatures around 28°C (83°F).

The best time to visit Selous is during the dry season between July and October or December and March. It’s best to visit during the dry season when the wildlife tends to cluster around the river and waterholes, including our camp waterhole, making viewing and photography easier.

Christmas and the New Year is our peak period.

However, we think the very best months to visit are January, February and March if you can take the heat. Although it can be hot and humid during this time, the reserve is usually lush and green after the short rains at the end of the previous year.

Better yet, many of the animals have babies with them at this time of year which is always beautiful to see.

This is such an excellent season for game viewing that it’s worth braving the hot weather, especially for guests in our luxury tented accommodation who can cool down in the pool anytime. Our swimming pool looks out over the waterhole so you can float around with a cocktail while the wildlife wallows in the waterhole.

Selous Camp is open all year round. However, it can be impossible to access during the peak rainy season in April and May so we recommend you avoid planning your visit then if possible.
